FALL RIVER, Mass. — Former Durfee High School basketball star and Boston Celtics point guard Chris Herren was found unconscious behind the wheel of a car after police said he crashed into a telephone pole in Fall River.
The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday at the corner of Oak Grove Avenue and Saxon Street, police said.
Police found Herren unconscious in his car with a bag of heroin on the passenger seat next to him.
According to the Fall River Herald News, police found Herren slumped over the steering wheel of his Mitsubishi Lancer, which was partially up on the sidewalk with its engine running and in gear.
After being brought back to consciousness, Herren was taken to Chalton Memorial Hospital for treatment, the Herald News reported.
Herren faces charges of recklessly operating a motor vehicle, operating under the influence and possession of heroin.
Herren has had a history of drug problems.
In 2007, Herren, 32, was arrested on possession of a controlled substance charge and driving under the influence. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to three years probation.
In 2005, Herren pleaded no contest in Newport Superior Court to reduced charges of driving with a suspended license and driving under the influence.
He was arrested again in Portsmouth in December 2004 after he allegedly had a seizure in his car and lost consciousness while waiting in a drive-through lane at a Dunkin’ Donuts coffee shop. When police revived him, they found 18 empty packets, containing heroin residue along with drug paraphernalia.
Herren was a former McDonald’s High School All-American and went on to play college basketball at Fresno State University.
Herren had a short NBA career that took him to Denver. He also spent time playing for the Boston Celtics.
